YOBS are starting fires deliberately so they can target firefighters with missiles and fireworks, it has been claimed.

Firefighters were attacked in Crook, County Durham, last night (OCT 31) after they were called out to deal with a pile of burning bins and rubble believed to have been set alight by a gang of youths.

Up to eight youths believed to be in their mid teens hurled lit fireworks at the crew and their engine as they battled the blaze in the West End Villas area at about 10pm, the latest of several fires started in that part of town.

No damage was caused to the engine and the fire fighters were uninjured but Lee Asprey, the Fire Investigation Manager for the Fire Service, said such attacks will not be tolerated.

He said: “These bonfires are being lit to deliberately draw fire crews into a situation where they can be attacked. “The situation in West End Villas is of great concern to us.”

Mr Aspery said CCTV footage from the engine is now being reviewed and police are now investigating.

He also warned youths against starting bonfires in general.

The fire investigator said: “They are placing their own lives at risk and damaging the communities where they live.

“Every time a fire engine and crew are turned out to put bonfires out this is drawing resources away from where they are needed to protect lives, homes and property.”

Both the fire service and police are urging residents to be vigilant and if they see materials which could potentially be used for a fire they are asked to contact their relevant council.

Anyone with information on the attack is caused to contact police on 101.
