A RELOCATED annual fireworks display has received a cash boost to ensure it continues in future years.

The Durham Police community bonfire and firework display has been held on open land alongside force headquarters on the Aykley Heads estate in Durham City.

But with redevelopment imminent at Aykley Heads, an alternative venue for the display has been pinpointed on the events field at Beamish Museum, near Stanley, County Durham.

Durham Police Authority has approved a one-off contribution of £2,000 to the cost of this year’s display, which takes place on Monday (NOV 5).

Authority chairman Peter Thompson said: “In previous years it has attracted over 10,000 people from across the county and played a valuable role in ensuring community safety through the provision of a safe and well organised event.

“Durham Police Authority fully supports the event and it’s hoped our contribution will provide the event with a degree of financial security to help it to grow in 2013.”

This year’s event is expected to prove smaller in scale than in previous years, with numbers limited to 4,000 through ticket sales to avoid potential traffic problems reaching the open air museum site, on the A693.

Tickets, costing £4 per person, are available via www.beamish.org.uk, or by calling the museum, on 0191-370 4000, tomorrow (THURSDAY NOV 1), on Friday, or Monday, between 9am and 4pm.

Admission is by ticket only and no tickets will be sold on the night.

Under-threes will be admitted free of charge.

The gates at Beamish open to event-goers at 6pm, with the bonfire being lit at 7pm and the display beginning at 7.30pm.
