A PEDESTRIAN was killed as he walked on a main road during the rush hour and was hit by a number of different vehicles.

The tragedy on the A66 near Dunnington, York, at about 5.30pm on Tuesday, blocked the road for several hours.

And police are now appealing for information as they try to piece together exactly what happened.

Traffic Sergeant Pete Wood said: “We need to establish why the man was in the carriageway and the circumstances leading up to the collision.

“The road will have been dark and busy at around 5.15 – 5.30pm and we are appealing for anyone who saw a pedestrian in the road or at the side of the road during that time or anyone who witnessed the actual collision to contact us.”

He added: “Tragically, the man has been hit by more than one vehicle and we need to establish if there are any other motorists who may have been involved without realising.

“ am therefore appealing for any other motorists travelling on the A166 at the time of the collision who believes they could be involved, to also get in touch.”
