FIVE people were arrested around last night’s Wear-Tees derby but police have praised the behaviour of the majority of fans.

The Capital One Cup match at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light saw a large police presence across the city, as more than 32,000 fans attended the game – including around 2,700 Middlesbrough fans, most of whom travelled on specially organised coaches.

Five men were arrested – four for alcohol related offences and one on suspicion of assault.

Chief Superintendent Steve Neill said the match had gone well from a policing perspective, with no major issues or incidents and the majority of fans there to enjoy the game.

“It was positive to see that the majority of the fans that attended did so for the right reasons and did their clubs credit,” he said.

Middlesbrough fans were held in the North Stand for 20 minutes after the final whistle before being escorted to their coaches and other transport.

Those arrested were: a 20-year-old Middlesbrough man on suspicion of being drunk in a sports ground; three men from Sunderland and County Durham aged 21, 26 and 35 for possessing alcohol in a sports ground; and a 20-year-old County Durham man on suspicion of assault.
