A SCARBOROUGH councillor has called for Jimmy Savile’s name to be removed from the Honour Board for the Freedom of the Borough, and for a memorial plague and street signs bearing his name to be taken down.

Councillors Tom Fox and Derek Bastiman have added a notice of motion to the agenda of a full council meeting of Scarborough Borough Council.

Coun Fox said: “This council wishes to send its heartfelt support to, and acknowledge the courage of those who have come forward having suffered horrendous abuse at the hands of the alleged serial predatory sexual offender, Sir Jimmy Savile.

“While recognising the police enquiry continues, the revelations and public statements by the police leave this council of the opinion that the removal of street signs and memorial plaque should be fully supported.

“It also supports the family’s actions in having the headstone on his grave removed.”

He added that in light of the allegations of the sexual allegations spanning six decades, the council agrees that if it was aware of the revelations at the time, his nomination for Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Scarborough would have been refused.

He said: “It is therefore proposed that his name be removed from the Honour Board for Freeman of the Borough pending the final report from the Metropolitan Police, when this council will make a permanent decision in relation to the matters referred to in this motion.”
