OCCUPANTS of two homes were evacuated after a car crashed into a house, rupturing a gas main, early this morning (TUE OCT 30).

Police received a report of a car hitting a house in Sunderland, at 2.20am.

The car struck the front of the property, in Newcastle Road, rupturing the gas main.

Police cordoned off the street while engineers were called to check the damage and to seal off the gas supply.

Occupants of both the house which was struck and an adjacent property were evacuated temporarily as a precaution.

A 40-year-old man, believed to have been driving the car involved, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking.

He remained in police custody later in the day, helping inquiries into the incident.
