AN attempt to stage the world’s biggest rugby match has fallen narrowly short.
Durham City Rugby Club tried to break the world record for the number of players taking part in a competitive rugby match at their Hollow Drift ground, in Green Lane, on Sunday.
Details are still being worked out, but organisor Grant Thompson said the attempt had fallen just short.
“It was a little disappointing but it was still a great day,” he said.
The world record remains at 179, which was set in a game between Penryn Saracens and Penryn Borough, played in Penryn, Cornwall, in July last year.
Sunday’s match was also a fundraiser, held in aid of Armed Forces charity Help for Heroes and former Durham captain Kevin Showler, who suffered a brain tumour.
Mr Thompson said: “Kevin got on at the end to play a bit of touch rugby and everybody had a great time.”
No figures for the amount raised for the two causes are yet available.
