A MULT-MILLION pound project to build 425 buildings on the site of a former County Durham factory is set to be debated next week.

Developer DTZ Leeds has drawn up plans to develop the derelict former Electrolux site, on Merrington Lane, Spennymoor.

The scheme will feature mainly houses but it will also include a care home, shopping area and other commercial facilities.

The project has been backed by some locals who feel it will revitalise the local economy but others want the land left for industrial use.

The plan is be debated by Durham County Council’s planning services committee on Tuesday, November 6, and it is recommended for approval.

John Brooks, DTZ planning director, said:“We’re looking forward to meeting with the planning committee and anticipate a good result.

“A lot of hard work has gone into producing the plans for this site and throughout our consultations with DCC, so we’re keen to get the ball rolling on the project.”

County councillor Neil Foster, who covers the nearby Tudhoe ward, is in favour of the plan.

He said: “I think this scheme will be a good use for the land and I am very supportive of the project.

“People keep saying it the land should be kept and used for industrial use but this is the only scheme that has come forward.”

Barratt North-East is also looking into a £60m scheme to build 366 homes on the site of the former Thorn factory on Merrington Lane, Spennymoor, too.
