A BRAVE teenager who lost a leg to a rare form of cancer has collected another new prosthetic.

Kieran Maxwell, from Heighington, near Darlington, was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, which attacks bone and muscle tissue, in October 2010.

He subsequently had his left leg amputated at the knee and is now in remission.

The 14-year-old is due to take part in a gymnastics display in Spennymoor tomorrow (October 27), with fellow members of the Athena Sports Academy.

Last week, The Northern Echo reported how Kieran and his mother, Nicola, had travelled to the private Dorset Orthopaedic clinic, in Burton-on-Trent, to collect a leg that will enable him to take part in mainstream competitions.

He is still awaiting physio sessions to help him get used to the gym leg, which comes complete with a 'blade' similar to those worn by South African paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius.

Today (October 26), Kieran and Mrs Maxwell again travelled to Staffordshire, to collect a leg that the teenager will use on a day-to-day basis.

Fundraising for Kieran's prosthetics has been ongoing for over a year.

The campaign received a major boost earlier this year when Euromillions lottery winners Chris and Colin Weir, from Ayrshire, in Scotland, made a five-figure contribution.
