A WORLD famous scientist has officially opened a new £7m sixth form centre in the region.

Professor Lord Robert Winston had a tour of Middlesbrough College’s new MC6 Sixth Form Centre and Sports Academy before delivering a masterclass to A Level students.

His talk on the subject of pre-implementation genetic diagnosis was filmed by media students and used to enhance the learning experience of students.

College Principal Mike Hopkins said: “By creating MC6 and its extraordinary facilities we have raised the bar for the young people of the Tees Valley by providing one of the best Further Education Centres in the country.”

The centre also includes new sporting facilities, which caters for sports academies in basketball, football, gymnastics and volleyball.

Lord Winston said: “It is immensely important to engage with young people as they consider their career options, which is why I’m delighted to be opening MC6 which will offer exceptional facilities for students.

“The students of Middlesbrough are being provided with fantastic opportunities to further their learning, resulting in solid foundations on which to build their futures.

“And, it’s great to see continued investment in education and the future of the country’s young people at this time.”
