A CONTINENTAL market has heralded the opening of a city’s food festival.

The showcase of foods from across the globe opened in Durham Market Place today (Thursday, October 25) and continues until Sunday.

Meanwhile, Durham Food Festival is set to begin tomorrow night when celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli, host of TV’s Chef Academy, will join chocolatier Paul A Young for a demonstration and tasting evening at Cafe Cenno, in Durham Indoor Market.

On Saturday and Sunday, there will be a gourmet food marquee on Palace Green with more than 100 stalls, masterclass demonstrations, book signings and food tasting.

Demonstrators will include Mr Novelli, Mr Young, Bob Arora from Newcastle’s Sachins Indian Restaurant and Alan O’Kane from Wynyard Hall Hotel.

Outside, there will be tours of Durham’s World Heritage Site and children’s entertainment.

The marquee is open from 9am to 6pm on Saturday and 10am to 4.30pm on Sunday. Entry costs £4.50 for adults, or £4 in advance through the festival’s website. For full listings, visit durhamfoodfestival.com
