A WOMAN who was driving a van when it veered off a busy dual carriageway and down an embankment, leaving four people injured, has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

The 39-year-old, from Rainton Bridge, near Durham, was at the wheel of a red Vauxhall Vivaro travelling east on the A690 between the Gilesgate roundabout and junction 62 (Carrville) of the A1(M), near Durham City, on Sunday afternoon when it went off the road and careered down a steep hillside, rolling several times before coming to a halt.

Four women in the van, including the driver herself, were hurt.

The driver suffered swelling and bruising to her right arm and left eye and was treated in hospital.

A 21-year-old suffered a serious arm injury and was airlifted to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), where she underwent surgery for a deep laceration. She was released from hospital on Monday.

The other two women, aged 38 and 45, were kept in the RVI overnight but had minor injuries only and were released on Monday.
