THE search is on for a beauty queen who epitomises all that is good about the Cleveland area.

The first ever Miss Cleveland competition was officially launched today (weds) in conjunction with Stockton’s Daisy Chain charity, which helps people with autism.

The pageant has been organised by former beauty queen Alexandra Devine, who was crowned Miss Sunderland in 2009 and Miss Durham in 2010.

Ms Devine, from Hartlepool, said: “Miss Cleveland has to be genuine. We want someone who is going to want to do charitable work. She has to be a young woman who is looking to make a positive difference.

“You don’t have to be a model - looks are not what it is all about. Miss Cleveland should have a great personality and be a girl who can represent the area.”

Finalists will take part in events including sports, fundraising and volunteering. One round will involve them making recycled clothing. The competition also aims to raise awareness of the Daisy Chain charity.

Ms Devine, 22, said: “Modern day pageants are very different from that of old. There is no longer a swimsuit round and there is a great emphasis on charitable and environmental causes and building confidence and positivity in the girls participating.”

The final of the competition will be held at The Swan Hotel in Billingham on Saturday, March 2, 2013. Prizes for the winner include entrance into Miss England, which could lead to entry into Miss World, a modelling portfolio and a pageant training course.
