A HOST of North-East organisations have been rewarded for their commitment to promoting equality.

More than 250 guests attended the North East Equality Awards final at the Gosforth Marriott Hotel on Friday (October 19) to see businesses and community organisations receive awards for their efforts in creating more inclusive workplaces and communities.

Among the winners was Leanne Wilkinson of Newton Aycliffe-based charity DISC (Developing Initiatives, Supporting Communities) who picked up the Individual Award for her work with the gypsy, Roma and travelling community.

She forged relationships with members of the community and helped shape national health policy after realising that their health was at risk because some of them could not read instructions on their medication.

Other winners included City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust which scooped the Outstanding Practice for its work experience scheme involving disabled students, while Middlesbrough College won the Colleges and Learning Providers with over 50 staff category.
