Reg Foster, Darlington

"My first car in 1962 was a blue four-door 1955 Standard 10hp with 55,000 miles on the clock. It cost me £275 and the registration was CEF 7.

This was the poshest car in the showroom then at Chris Barninghams Central Garage on Coniscliffe Road, Darlington.

I remember the rear doors rattled constantly as the hinges were worn and the rubber gear lever knob had deteriorated and was always sticky to touch.

In February 1963, my wife to be and I planned to drive to London for our honeymoon, but when I opened the bonnet to dip the oil the wind blew it off and it went over the roof and down the road.

The Northern Echo:

Whilst driving it to Arnold Cockburns garage in Newton Lane for repair, the clutch broke and parts could not be acquired for ten days.

We resorted to train travel to London - probably a wise move considering that severe winter.

Subsequently, my parents bought the car and it soldiered on for three more years before being scrapped.

We now drive a new Audi A1 since at our age I think we deserve hassle-free motoring in comfort."
