ANOTHER item of intrigue on the B6277 presents itself when one reaches the County Bridge at Middleton-in- Teesdale. It was built in about 1814.
Middleton had two turnpike roads converging on it – the Eggleston Coal Road of 1792, which ran from The Edge at Woodland, and the Brough-under- Stainmore road of 1817.
Turnpike roads were marked by mileposts. The one on the County Bridge is set deep into tarmac. A black hand points one way to “Greta Bri…” and the other way to “…idge Road”.
What was the “…idge Road”?
