THE Lune Viaduct is still a wonderful, heady place, partly because down at its feet is the late 18th Century roadbridge that carries the B6277 up the dale.
When the viaduct was being built, the roadbridge was widened on the upstream side.
Bill Payne has long been intrigued by the keystone on the upstream side. It appears to have a stony face carved into it, and quite possibly a word written above it. But history doesn’t record whose the face is and what the word says – can anyone enlighten us?
