WHILE you might not automatically associate a historic house museum with the video sharing website YouTube, providing digital access to museum collections is becoming more and more important in the modern world.

Following the impact of lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic many museums have started or continued to share videos online.

In 2018 the previous curator of Kiplin Hall, Dawn Webster retired.

After 18 years of bringing Kiplin back to life from a derelict shell Dawn was a much-loved curator and an expert on all things Kiplin.

To preserve and recognise Dawn’s contribution to the organisation a series of short films were created.

In the short films Dawn explored the history of Kiplin Hall, its owners’ lives, and her favourite objects and stories.

During the lockdown the films were enjoyed by people who were not able to visit the museum, and attracted new visitors to come in real life post lockdown.

Since the lockdown Kiplin has also used its YouTube channel to launch events.

The reopening of the hall post lockdown 1.0 in 2020 was promoted with a Hollywood-style movie trailer, likened to Indiana Jones, which proved popular across social media.

Attracting an audience of middle-aged adults with children of their own.

Unable to open the 2021 exhibition ‘Introducing the Annie Marchant Kitchen and Dairy Collection’ due to lockdown restrictions Kiplin produced a short film with local videographer Sarah MacVean about the making of the exhibition, which featured local MP and Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak.

To view any of the video content online simply search ‘Kiplin Hall & Gardens’ on YouTube to find the official channel.
