THREE weeks ago, John Phelan recalled Stockton’s 1958 FA Cup Amateur Cup win over holders Bishop Auckland in his Grassroots Memories column.
Stockton won 2-1 at the Victoria Ground, a result which ended Bishops’ incredible run of 25 games undefeated in the competition.
Reader Ian Butler, from Bedale, North Yorklshire, sent in this photograph of the Stockton team waiting on the platform at Darlington railway station, where they were heading to play Barnet in the quarterfinals.
Unfortunately, they lost 3-1.
The photograph includes players Alf Coverdale, Andy Young, Jimmy Swan, Terry Garbutt, Sid Monkhouse, Charlie Helyer, Mike Laing, Micky Waller, Peter Foxley, Doug Ormston, Des Clough (captain and brother of Brian), and Ian Butler.
The photograph also shows Jimmy Gordon (front, third from left), who travelled with the squad as manager, because team manager Jonny Spuhler was indisposed and unable to travel. Both Gordon and Spuhler were former Middlesbrough players.
Woking went on to lift the Amateur Cup that year by beating Ilford in the final. The following year, the trophy returned to the North-East when Crook Town defeated Barnet 3-2 in the final at Wembley.
