DARLINGTON Centre for Local Studies, which is in the Crown Street library, is now reopened after a couple of months’ closure caused by flooding. The Victorian architect – our hero GG Hoskins – disliked gutters cluttering up his designs so much that he hid them away.
This means that, 130 years later, no one was able to spot when there was a blockage in them.
Therefore, all the water ended up in the local studies section.
However, they have now dried out, and restored Mr Hoskins’ 1885 plasterwork to its original glory, so there are clearly no hard feelings.
