The 3000 GT (which was also known as the GTO) was born at the peak of the Japanese sports car war in the early Nineties, when every manufacturer suddenly gave their engineering teams carte blanche to go crazy. The result in this case was a two-seater packed with technology.
WHEN WAS IT MADE? Following a sneak peek at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show, the GTO went on sale in 1990. The car was supposed to compete with the Honda NSX, the Mazda RX-7, Nissan's 300ZX and Skyline GT-R plus the Toyota Supra. The car served as the flagship of the Mitsubishi range for the rest of the decade.
WHAT MADE IT GREAT? This is a classic Japanese muscle car – long, wide and powerful. It's beautifully built and reliable.
WHAT DID OWNERS HATE? Despite receiving the full package of performance enhancing tech, such as full-time four-wheel drive, four-wheel steer, continuously adjusting suspension and active aero spoilers, the 3000 GT just wasn't that fast.
IS IT WORTH GETTING ONE? Prices are pretty much at rock bottom these days so now is the time to jump in.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? We found a clean-looking silver coupe with just 78,000 miles on the clock for a mere £1,000. A dealer in the south had an nearly new example (just 5,800 miles) on an L plate for £9,995.
