AFTER two postponements lately, finally we can talk about a Darlo game and a win. There was some doubt whether the game at Bamber Bridge would go ahead, but after an early pitch inspection we were able to load the bus. On our travels we bumped into Spennymoor’s Nathan Fisher who tried to wrestle the bus driver and join the lads on the bus, but we had to tell him no. He needs to accept that he's moved clubs now.
The pitch was pretty heavy and the cold wind didn't help things, but it was the same for both teams and Bamber Bridge are a very good outfit. They pass the ball around and were sharp in all areas. First 20 minutes were difficult for us and we were getting pegged back a little which resulted in going 1-0 down. The response we showed was brilliant, a tackle by Leon Scott seemed to get us going a bit then closely followed by the equaliser through Army [Graeme Armstrong] after some great foot work by Tommo [Stephen Thompson]. Soon after we took the lead through a great individual goal by Amar Purewal. In big games moments like that are priceless.
Second half we defended brilliantly as a team, from the forwards chasing everything down to Pete Jameson commanding his box well. We've got a very honest group of lads who all work hard for the club and each other and Saturday showed that away to a very good side on a heavy pitch.
After the 2-1 win we were able to enjoy our Christmas night out in Liverpool. Well some of us did, unfortunately Terry Galbraith couldn't get in anywhere as they don't allow LA Lakers basketball tops and Air Jordan's in most nightclubs. I tried to lend him a nice shirt I'd packed, but it was far too baggy round the arms and chest. It was back to the apartment and Match of the Day for Terrance.
I'll just finish off by wishing Leon Ryan all the best after leaving Whitley Bay last week. It didn't work out as well as he'd have expected with the standards he set as a player, but Leon has all the characteristics to bounce back and become a better manager through this experience. I'm pretty confident and hopeful he'll be back at a football club in some capacity soon.
Whitley is a great club and a really good job for anyone looking to take it. The potential there is huge and the support they get should see them climb the leagues. It will be interesting to see who takes the role and where the club end up at the end of the season.
