Sit back, think and remember
What happened a hundred years ago
Our brave soldiers were sent off
To fight a bloody war
In the mud, the rain, the snow
They fought from flooded trenches
The dead, the dying and wounded
On the battlefields all around
Millions of British soldiers died
Many frozen to the ground
The deafening sound of big guns
Shells exploding on the ground
Sons fought alongside fathers
Cousins, friends, uncles too
They were told
This war would end all wars
That was never true
Yes, we won the first world war
But both sides had lost the peace
With survivors, very few
Please sit back and remember
Those brave soldiers died for you
Their bodies buried in the ground
In death...
An everlasting peace
They finally found.
We never will forget
Douglas Ward, Crook
