Heading out to war, I was so excited,
All of us together, we were united,
Saying my goodbyes, thinking it won’t be forever
I didn’t once think about fear
As my mother was holding back her tears,
I held her close and whispered
‘Goodbye my dear’
Early hours in the morning, we have arrived
From any sense of normality,
We are deprived
I can’t believe my eyes,
How did they get us here
With all those lies
I was young, I was free,
Suddenly that has all changed
But at home they can’t see
Dead men, deaf men, desperate men,
We’re all scared, we say our last prayers,
Amen
I hear a shot nearby,
How come we’ve just got here,
And I’m already saying goodbye
We went for hope, we went for glory
I wish this was some other soldier’s story
