A North Yorkshire countryside clothing firm with a passion for quality has turned its attention to women

JOSEPH Turner was established in the North Yorkshire market town of Thirsk by Christopher Legard, a selfdiagnosed shirt nut who was deeply frustrated at the lack of premium quality men’s shirts available on the high street. So being a Yorkshire-man with a keen eye for quality, he set about providing just that.

Employing all the traditional tailoring methods such as two-piece collars, four-piece split yokes, single needle stitching, sleeve gauntlets and extra-long tails, Joseph Turner began making shirts carryin all the hallmarks of quality you would expect in an expensive Jermyn Street shirt.

Since launching in 1997, and with a continued focus on quality and heritage, the range has gradually been expanded to include a wide selection of men’s casualwear; tweed jackets woven in Scotland, wax jackets cut from British Millerain cloth and knitwear made from Yorkshire-spun lambswool.

Now the company has turned its attention to women, launching its first womenswear collection.

Inspired by the company’s Yorkshire heritage and designed to become wardrobe favourites, the Joseph Turner Woman range features handsome Yorkshire and Harris tweeds, elegant British-spun viscose jersey, tailored pieces in Yorkshire-woven wool and wax jackets made using British Millerain cloth.

Having spoken to a number of female customers, womenswear buying manager Rachael Joyce realised there was a real gap for highquality, sophisticated clothing that was made to fit properly and flatter the figure. This finding influenced key pieces in the range such as the illusion-fit denim and corduroy jeans, which have been crafted with innovative stretch technology to enhance the figure, and the elegant shirts in contemporary prints and stripes that are gently tailored for a feminine silhouette.

“Our aim was to design a range of smart and elegant wardrobe favourites that echoed our Yorkshire way of life,” says Rachael. “Women in this market want stylish clothes, made from high-quality fabrics that fit them well. They don’t want to compromise and we don’t think they should have to.”
