Laura Symonds talks to Moda in Pelle store manager Carrie-Ann Brown about her passion for footwear

Trying to resist filling every available storage space at home with shoes has been Carrie-Ann Brown’s biggest challenge in managing the stylish Moda in Pelle store, in Grange Road, Darlington. From spending her teenage years working in a boutique in South Africa to becoming the store manager for a high-fashion shoe brand, Carrie has quite literally come a long way while fuelling her shoe obsession. The 31-year-old talks about her inspiration, style and, of course, shoes.

What inspired you to open a Moda in Pelle in Darlington?

IT stemmed from my interest in fashion, which started when I was 14 and living in South Africa. My first job was working for my mother’s friend, who had a high-end clothing boutique. I went to college in South Africa where I did the equivalent of Alevels studying business, economics and criminology, but I always had an interest in fashion – predominately shoes. I am obsessed with shoes and wanted to bring great styles to people in the area.

What is your favourite piece in the store at the moment?

I absolutely love our knee-high Seliner boots. They are stylishly elegant and can be worn dressed up for a night out or with a poncho and statement leather bag for a city-chic look.

How would you describe your own style?

I don’t necessarily have a certain style; my look is pretty eclectic. In the morning I decide on a pair of boots or shoes and then create my outfit around what I am wearing on my feet. For a night out, I try to go for a nice skirt with a blazer – something elegant, that looks as though I have made an effort. Honestly, I don’t go out shopping that much, but if I see something I like, I’ll buy it. TK Maxx is good to get one-off items, so you’re not going to see everyone else in the same clothes, but I also like to visit local shops like the ones here in Grange Road. There are little boutiques in Yarm which I try to support as well.

What are your must-have beauty products?

For my skin, it has to be Elizabeth Arden, and then Dior mascara.

Which high-end designer do you admire the most and why?

I really admire Mehmet Kurdash, a master shoemaker renowned for exquisitely sculptured footwear and handbags. What attracts me most is that they are still designed and made in the UK.

Do you have any sentimental pieces you can’t part with?

My first pair of Moda in Pelle boots, which I bought five years ago. They are a pair of patent knee-high boots that were instrumental in fuelling my obsession with shoes and boots.

Have there been any shoe trends you wouldn’t be seen dead in?

I generally don’t wear biker boots like Dr Martens. They are a bit heavy, especially for work.

What footwear do you pack for holidays?

You’d have your trusty old wedges, wouldn’t you? Ones you could wear in the day and evening. I’d also pack a flip-flop sandal for easy and light packing. The last ones I bought had a mix of orange and pink and they go with everything. I tend to go for two pairs of shoes rather than taking loads.

Lastly, flats or heels?

Heels. But if I do wear a pair of flats, I make sure they are a statement pair.
