EXPECTANT father Jai should expect the unexpected when he least expects it in Emmerdale (ITV1). He has great expectations as he plans to accompany the pregnant mother of his secret child Rachel for her first scan in hospital.
Okay, so he’s omitted to tell wife Charity that he got Rachel pregnant on a drunken one night stand (although their inebriated condition meant not much standing was done). At least he’s being a good dad-to-be by going to the scan with her.
If only his brother Nikhil wasn’t also there with his pregnant girlfriend Gennie. She’s been rushed to hospital when she starts to suffer what she thinks are contractions.
Jai and Nikhil bump into each other in the hospital corridor. Naturally enough, Nikhil asks what he’s doing there. Jai makes up some story about their father, Rishi, calling him and that he’s there to keep them company.
So far so good. If only Rishi hadn’t found Rachel’s scan photo in Jai’s office. Jai’s not stupid enough to put it in a picture frame on his desk, but it’s there and his dad sees it, puts two and two together – and finds that baby makes three.
Another of the secrets in the village is David and Priya’s affair. She’s the sister of Jai and Nikhil which makes you wonder if Rishi’s advice about sex to his children was somewhat lacking in wisdom.
Priya tells David (who’s in a sham marriage with jailbird Alicia) that he must prove he’s serious by taking her on holiday. That means lying to Alicia’s son, Jacob, whom he’s looking after while his mum plays at being in Bad Girls. Someone wanting to do good for children is Ray, in EastEnders (BBC1). After being stopped by the police recently (and no, before you ask, he didn’t call them plebs) he’s been inspired to set up a youngsters’ scheme at the gym, presumably to beat the living daylights out of each other in the boxing ring rather than on the streets.
Roy’s Rolls goes all Spanish in Coronation Street (ITV1) as Mary and Anna, left in charge by the holidaying Croppers, get out their castanets and put the paella in the pan to bring a taste of Spain to the cobbles with sun, sea and sangria. Well, they can manage the sangria, but the other two are in short supply in Weatherfield.
Everyone has a merry old time – except Nick Nick Tilsley round at the Bistro. It’s an empty Bistro because all the customers have been lured to Roy’s Rolls with the offer of free booze and discounts. When he goes to see what Mary’s done he’s impressed. Perhaps he should offer her a job at the Bistro.
