MEXICAN duo Rodrigo and Gabriela used to have a raw edge to their work, but 1.2 million album sales later and they are now about as polished as you can get.
This new album is effectively an old album reinterpreted, but take my word for it, it’s like nothing you have ever heard from them before.
The reason, for the first time they are backed up by a full band, and not just any band but some of Havana’s finest young musicians, collectively known as CUBA.
Arranged by Rodrigo, in collaboration with Swiss-based pianist Alex Wilson, it breathes new life into some familiar songs. Along the way we also encounter guests such as Anoushka Shankar on guitar, rock drummer John Tempesta and Palestinian group Le Trio Joubran.
The end result is an album that has an incredibly infectious quality to it. If you could see me now even my fingers are typing in rhythm with the music.
If I had my heels with me, hey I might even be up and dancing. Now where’s a senorita when you need one?
