THIS is a film that was awarded the first ever Queer Palm at last year’s Cannes Film Festival for its contribution to lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender issues.

After the relatively straightforward drama Mysterious Skin, writer-director Gregg Araki returns to a more outlandish, more mystifying sci-fi, teenage, endof- the-world scenario with Kaboom.

Thomas Dekker is film student Smith who has a recurring dream – nightmare? – about the murder of a red-headed woman.

Never mind, there’s always the sight of his “excruciatingly hot straight” flatmate, surfer dude Thor (Chris Zylka) wandering around naked.

The more it goes on, the weirder it gets. Lesbianism, a spot of voodoo, alien twins, a secret underground cult and wrestling in your underwear are all thrown into the mix. Fact or fiction, imaginary or real? Who knows? And I feel some viewers will also add who cares?
