CD REVIEWS: Meadow/Blissful Ignorance (Edition Records EDN1025) I’m not sure what can be read into the album title as this is in fact a very thoughtful and considered performance.
Meadow comprises three of Europe’s most experienced musicians with Tore Brunborg on saxophones, John Taylor, piano, and Thomas Stronen, drums.
Each has impressed me in various groups, particularly on the ECM label, a link reinforced by the recording coming from the famous Rainbow Studios in Oslo.
Mats Eilertsen Trio/Elegy (Hubro HUBROCD2504) Another largely sensitive session from the bass player’s new trio, which has Harmen Fraanje on piano and Thomas Stronen (see above) on drums. Well up to the high standard we expect from jazz piano trios these days (and also mixed at Rainbow).
The programme is mostly original but there’s also a lengthy version of Nardis which might be a good track to check out first.
Hear You Say/Live in Wilisau (Intuition INTCHR71303) A glorious rip-roaring CD from trombonist Ray Anderson and saxophonist/clarinetist Marty Ehrlich with Brad Jones and Matt Wilson on bass and drums. There’s a lot of variety from a Portrait of Leroy Jenkins to blues, dance and funk in a wonderfully cheerful mix of styles.
