WELL, it worked for Elton John and David Furnish so why not for Christian and Syed in EastEnders (BBC1)?
The bespectacled pop person and his partner have welcomed a surrogate baby into their family and what a pop legend does one day, Walford gay lovebirds can do the next.
Onward Christian soldiers as he and Syed consider starting a family. They’ve even got a womb with a view to having a baby when Roxy offers to make Christian’s dream come true (no, not arrange a date with Ian McKellen) and carry a surrogate child for the couple.
First, they must decide how to do it.
Perhaps the old-fashioned way. Or the more modern turkey baster method.
Then again they could just go looking in a gooseberry bush.
Not everything goes according to plan. Syed has second thoughts about the idea, wondering if they shouldn’t wait a while before starting a family.
Alas, his change of mind comes too late as Roxy has already made use of the sperm sample in her fridge, although there was a nasty moment when someone thought it was yoghurt and tried to eat it.
In another branch of the Soapland’s Out Of The Closet Club, Aaron is worrying about his relationship with paralysed boyfriend Jackson in Emmerdale (ITV1).
He’s spending all his spare time at his bedside. But, like Jackson, their romance isn’t going anywhere.
Jackson, noble chap that he is, tells Aaron to go and get on with his life and stop spending so much time moping around by his bed. He respects Jackson’s wishes but it’s not really what he wants to do.
I do worry for Eileen Grimshaw’s safety in Coronation Street (ITV1) after swindling her boss, Owen Armstrong, out of £10,000. Usually, of course, it’s the other way round with the bosses exploiting their employees by giving themselves big pay rises and their workers nothing.
Now Eileen must pay. It may be Her Majesty’s Pleasure but it won’t be Eileen’s. She’s trying to repay the cash, but you know how slow banks are when it comes to clearing cheques.
Owen discovers the money is missing when his bank card is rejected and gets nasty with Eileen. My advice is for her to threaten to reveal his tax-dodging secrets if he tries to shop her to the cops.
