REVIEWS: Hindemith: The Complete Viola Music Vol 3 (Hyperion CDA67774) Lawrence Power’s revelationary series of Hindemith’s complete works for the viola continues into a final volume with the music for viola and orchestra. Hindemith was a renowned viola player himself and produced a substantial body of work for the instrument. Power’s invests these melodic and lyrical pieces with an authority and flair. Included is Hindemith’s only formally titled concerto for viola and full orchestra, Der Schwanendreher.
Jacobus Clemens non Papa (Requiem and Penitential Motets (Hyperion CDA67848) The Brabant Ensemble conducted by Stephen Rice present works from Clemens; some never recorded before. The 16th century polyphony is rich in harmonies and brought to life with beautiful singing.
Salve regina, Cantatas and Motets (Helios CDH55354) Countertenor James Bowman and soprano join The King’s Consort to present a series of cantatas and motets by Dominico and Alessandro Scarlatti and Johann Adolf Hasse.
