CD REVIEWS: Loose Tubes/Dancing in Frith Street (Loose Marble LM005)
This dynamic and irreverent 21-piece band burst onto the jazz scene in 1984, producing three LPs, before breaking up in 1990. This previously unissued session was recorded at Ronnie Scott’s Club and features Iain Ballamy, Django Bates, Eddie Parker, John Parricelli and others in a typically lively and enjoyable set.
Neon Quartet/Catch Me (Edition Records EDN1024)
Originally a trio, Neon has evolved into a quartet with original members Stan Sulzmann (saxes) and Jim Hart (vibes and marimba) now joined by pianist Kit Downes and drummer Tim Giles. These talented musicians gel perfectly, producing some beautiful solos amid some delightful interplay.
Clark Terry featuring Al Grey (Shades of Blues (Challenge CHR 70007) These two hugely experienced musicians and old friends work their way through a mixed programme of blues. Their utterly distinctive sounds contrast well but also blend beautifully.
They’re very ably supported by just Charles Fox’s piano and Marcus McLaurine’s bass on a timeless programme.
