Cannonball Adderley/Why am I treated so bad! (Capitol Jazz 56314)
A very lively and typical set from the alto player, recorded live in the studio before an appreciative audience.
It was the follow-up album to their big hit, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, with the same band with Joe Zawinul, Victor Gaskin and Roy McCurdy pushing the rhythm and brother Nat on cornet. With two extra tracks not on the original LP there's an hour by this quintet at its best.
The Jazz Crusaders at the Lighthouse (Pacific Jazz 56311)
The first of a series made at the famous Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, California and possibly the best.
Good, lively atmosphere and some impressive solos from the original line-up with Wayne Henderson trombone, Wilton Fender tenor sax, Joe Sample piano, Victor Gaskin (again) on bass and Stix Hooper drums. Two bonus tracks add another 17 minutes to make it very good value.
