Nicola Beneditti (DG476 3159)
The second album from the BBC Young Musician of 2004 reaffirms the talent of a consummate musician.
Mendelssohn's Violin Concert has a sparkle and rythmic litheness, enhanced by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields under composer-conductor James MacMillan. Beneditti captures the romantic essence of of Mozart's Adagio K216 and gives a fine account of From Ayshire, written specially for her by MacMillan. A worthy addition to any collection.
Mozart: Die Zauberflote, Claudio Abbado (DG477 5789GH2)
Claudio Abbado makes his first recording of the Flute, with a brilliantly articulated account of the score. Christoph Strehl is a spirited Tamino, while Dorothea Roschmann proves a fine partner. Erika Miklosa as The Queen of the Night delivers electrifying arias.
Highly recommended.
Wagner: Parsifal (DG 477 6006GH4)
Placido Domingo is in his vocal prime giving a powerful performance as Parsifal in this sweeping Wagner opera. Throw in the Vienna State Opera Chorus and Orchestra conducted by Christian Thielman and you have the recipe for musical brilliance. The listener will be transfixed throughout.
