Stan Kenton/Sophisticated Approach (Capitol Jazz 56310)
A new batch of vintage albums on Pacific and Capitol Jazz includes this sumptuous 1961 session by Kenton's expanded mellophonium orchestra. Lennie Niehaus was commissioned to arrange a series of standards and produced this outstanding album which includes But Beautiful, Time After Time and Easy To Love.
Serge Chaloff/Boston Blow-up! (Capitol Jazz 56313)
Kenton also produced this album by renowned baritone player Chaloff.
His fellow Bostonians include Boots Mussulli on alto, Herb Pomeroy trumpet and Ray Santisi piano. Chaloff died a couple of years later so this is welcome CD, especially with three bonus tracks.
Lou Rawls/Black and Blue + Tobacco Road (Capitol Jazz 54957)
A generous offering with two of Rawls' earliest albums, including some extended tracks and a couple more as bonus. Backing is by Onzy Matthews' Big Band with players like Richard 'Groove' Holmes, Curtis Amy and Sonny Criss. Rawls runs the gamut from Gloomy Sunday to Sentimental Journey.
