Beethoven: Andras Schiff (ECM New Series 476 3100)
Listening to the second release in Schiff's complete Beethoven cycle is an absolute pleasure.
This takes in the sonatas opus 10, written between 1796 and 1798 when the composer was not yet 30. This does not diminish their compositional quality and the interrelated masterpieces are conveyed with utter conviction. The next volume is eagerly awaited.
Michelle Makarski: To be Sung on Water (ECM 476 3120)
This carefully programmed album juxtaposes three sonatas for solo violin by Italian baroque master Guiseppe Tartini with two intriguing pieces by contemporary American composer Donald Crockett. The American violinist Michelle Makarski displays a consummate versatility as she as she tackles the lively contrasts between old and new. She is joined by Ronald Copes on viola to play To Be Sung on Water. Thought provoking and spiritually refreshing.
