Rorem: The Auden Songs, The Santa Fe Songs (Black Box BBM1104)
These two cycles, for solo voice and piano trio, by composer Ned Rorem display a sensitive response to words and thrilling vocal lines which mesh perfectly with the inner meaning of the poetry. The seven songs are given impassioned treatment by tenor Christopher Lemmings.
Mozart: The Four Flute Quartets, Richard Adeney (Resonance RSN 3064)
These must rank as some of the finest melodies, with sprightly scale passages and high trills. The luminosity of the quartets is done full justice by flautist Richard Adeney and the Melos Ensemble.
Haydn String Quartets: The Lindsays (ASV Gold GLD4010)
The Lindsays, who delighted audiences at the Sage Gateshead on their last tour, have left a rich musical legacy exemplified in this release of Haydn's String Quartets Opp 77, 42 and 103. A must.
