Hiromi/Spiral (Telarc CD83631)
This is the first time I've heard this brilliant young pianist and her trio although this is her third Telarc CD. She embraces both classical and rock influences but seems to me to have a very strong jazz sensitivity. The playing can be highly energetic or acutely delicate but it has a clear pulse and direction. Very impressive, and there's a bonus DVD with a short live video and full length surround mix.
Lynn Seaton Trio/Puttin' on the Ritz (Nagel Heyer NHCD099)
Bass player Lynn Seaton may not be immediately familiar but his long recording and playing career includes Basie, Herman, Scott Hamilton, Mark Murphy and dozens more. With Stephen Anderson on piano and Joel Fountain drums he tackles eight of his favourite songs, and one new one, including long persuasive versions of Gone with the Wind and Nature Boy. A very enjoyable, swinging, album.
