CD REVIEWS: Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet Live at the Union 1966 (Reel Recordings RR016) Those of us around at the time rated this as one of the best jazz groups and recent reissues of their few albums have confirmed that view. Now, here’s a live session, never issued before and long thought lost. Issued to coincide with last week’s Ian Carr Celebration it catches the band in wonderful form with great contributions from both leaders, Mike Garrick, Trevor Tomkins and both Dave Green and dep Tony Reeves on bass.

Available now on CD, and shortly on vinyl, from reelrecordings.org.

The Magic Hat Ensemble/This Conversation is Over (Jellymould Jazz JM-JJ004) An entertaining first album from this Northern band with Steve Chadwick on cornet, Tony Ormesher guitar, Andrzej Baranek piano, Nick Blacka bass and Rob Turner drums. They take a fresh, often irreverent look at some familiar tunes like Epistrophy, Darn That Dream and The Song Is You. Well worked out routines and crisp playing make this a most enjoyable debut.
