CD REVIEWS: David Liebman Trio/Lieb plays Weill (Daybreak DBCHR75439) A great selection of Kurt Weill’s tunes including Mack the Knife, Speak Low and My Ship. With just bass and drums on most tracks, and guest guitarist Jesse van Ruller on six, the focus is mainly on Liebman who impresses throughout on soprano and tenor sax, wooden flute and piano.
Basil Hodge/Sound Reasoning (Zeal ZEALCD2) This is only the composer/pianist’s second CD but it contains a wealth of fascinating music. It’s well interpreted by his band with Tony Kofi on saxes, Larry Bartley bass, Winston Clifford drums and, a new name to me, Fulvio Sigurta on flugelhorn and trumpet.
Karin Krog/Joy (Meantime MR15) One of Karin Krog’s first LPs, from 1968, on CD for the first time. It’s short perhaps, but highly concentrated, and I found it more and more compelling each time I listened. Great support from Arild Andersen, Palle Danielsson, Jan Garbarek and, on two bonus tracks, trumpeter Ted Curson
