REVIEWS: Beethoven Piano Concertos: Ronald Brautigam (BIS-SACD-1693) In 1806, Beethoven composed two concertos, the Fourth Piano Concerto and Violin Concerto Op 61. He returned to them to produce new versions, including a solo part for piano from the latter. Ronald Brautigam presents expressive accounts of these 1808 versions, transcribed by Beethoven scholar Barry Cooper.

Dutilleux/Lutoslawski: Christian Poltera (BIS-SACD-1777) The Swiss cellist Poltera brings a penetrating insight to readings of works by Henri Dutilleux and Witold Lutoslawski. The contrasting soundworlds are encapsulated in Dutilleux’s Toute un Monde Lointain and Lutoslawski’s cello concerto.

Rolf Lislevand: Diminuito (ECM New Series) Following the success of his album Nuove Musiche – featuring early 17th Century Italian music – the Norwegian master lutenist delves further back into the country’s renaissance. The title refers to the practice of embellishing vocal melodies, which are conveyed with warmth by the beautiful voices of Linn Andrea Fuglseth and Anna Maria Fiman.
