CD REVIEWS
Wild Bill Davison/Alex Welsh (Lake LACD279)
The fiery trumpetcornet player brought out the best in the Alex Welsh Band when he toured with them in the Sixties. This previously unissued live set from the Manchester Sports Guild, is perhaps on the raucous side, but wonderfully evocative with great contributions from Roy Williams, John Barnes and Fred Hunt as well as Bill and Alex.
Humph & his European Friends (Lake LACD276)
A generous selection from three LPs which featured Humph as guest of clarinetists Jean-Francois Bonnel and Pierre Atlan, and cornet player Bent Persson. With accompaniment from John RT Davies, Wally Fawkes, Martin Litton and many more this shows Humph’s abiding love of the classic jazz repertoire.
The Fryer-Barnhart International All Star Jazz band/A Break in the Lakes (Lake LACD277)
The band’s fifth album but first in the studio, recorded in between gigs around this year’s Keswick Jazz Festival. With Gordon Whitworth, George Huxley, Annie Hawkins and Nick Ward the band gelled instantly on a series of familiar jazz classics.
