CD REVIEWS
Partisans/By Proxy (Babel BDV2983)
Led by award-winning musicians Phil Robson (best guitar 2009) and Julian Siegel (best instrumentalist 2007) the lineup is completed by bass player Thaddeus Kelly and dynamo drummer Gene Calderazzo. It’s their fourth album, tight and cohesive as ever, with virtually all new material which should delight the crowd at the Cluny.
Jim Hall & Bob Brookmeyer/Live at the North Sea Jazz Festival (Challenge CHR70063)
The guitarist and trombonist were, of course, members of Jimmy Giuffre’s seminal Fifties’ trio which explored ways of playing without a specific rhythm section.
Here they go one step further in a beautiful and thoughtful reworking of several classic tunes.
John Etheridge/Alone! Live (Dyad Records DY026)
This is perhaps the ultimate challenge for a guitarist and John Etheridge pulls it off brilliantly. Using a variety of guitars he covers a wide range from Hendrix’s Little Wing to Mingus’ Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow and his own Six Lines. Available from johnetheridge.com
