CD REVIEWS: Tierney Sutton Band/Desire (Telarc CD-83685) In a determinedly fresh look at some well known lyrics, Tierney Sutton offers a very different interpretation from the norm. They’re just as musical, and indeed the band is a vital part of this new approach, but you may not have realised the depths of meaning in Paper Moon or Whatever Lola Wants.

Ann Hampton Calloway/At Last (Telarc CD-83665) This CD has everything going for it – a top class trio in Ted Rosenthal, Jay Leonhart and Victor Lewis, some wonderful cameo performances by guest soloists including Wycliffe Gordon, Marvin Stamm and Teodross Avery, but, most of all, a singer in magnificent voice performing a very well chosen programme ranging from Over the Rainbow to Joni Mitchell’s Carey.

This is truly an outstanding album.

Karen Lane/Beautiful Love (Smash Digital SMD002) Lane’s is a lighter voice, but still tuneful and she swings very easily.

Good accompaniment from Tom Cawley, Andy Hamill and Nic France with some attractive saxophone solos by Robin Fincker.

Another enjoyable programme too, including Angel Eyes, Mood Indigo and Meditation.
