WOMEN used to chain themselves to railings to promote the feminist cause.

Fiz has other ideas in Coronation Street (ITV1). Never mind wanting to get the vote, she wants to get her man – jailed teacher John Stape. He’s otherwise engaged in a prison cell where he’s been placed on suicide watch. He gets the biggest shock since he dropped his bar of Imperial Leather in the showers when he sees what Fiz is doing.

She chains herself to the railings outside the prison and unwraps a banner declaring JOHN SNAPES MARRY ME. No wonder John is surprised, but will it shake him out of the depths of despair into which his prison sentence (for kidnapping Randy Rosie) has plunged him?

He’s already told Fiz he doesn’t want to see her any more. But viewing her chained melody, he comes over all jolly and says ‘yes’.

Fiz makes such a fuss that the governor even relents and lets her in to see John. A happy day for the couple is a long way off. How will Fiz break the news of the engagement without being lynched by half of Weatherfield?

Rosie seems to have got over being kidnapped by John as she works her way from bed to bed in the Street. A business meeting with Underworld boss Luke, or Luke Who’s Talking as we know him, is arranged because he has his eye on her new-found cash – the money she was given by John for kidnapping her. She plans to buy shares in Underworld, wanting nothing more than to get her hands on his dividends. She demands ten per cent of the factory but settles for 100 per cent of Luke between the sheets. Bed sheets, not balance sheets. Garage owner Kevin is fed up with oil changes and wants to take Molly to bed, presumably to give her a full service as husband Tyrone has been neglectful of late, mumbling something about being married to an old banger.

Kevin and Molly’s tryst is almost discovered when his wife, Silly Sally, arrives at the garage, leaving Molly to hide in the boot from the old boot.

Over in Walford, Jack Branning is feeling betrayed in EastEnders (BBC1). He discovers that lover Ronnie Mitchell has been poking holes in his condoms in her desperate bid to get pregnant.

Unlike Fiz’s wedding proposal, his suggestion to Ronnie falls on deaf ears. This is unfortunate because while he’s suffering from premature rejection, Peggy Mitchell is hanging out the banners celebrating their engagement. He adds insult to injury by telling Ronnie she’s as bad as her wicked father Archie.

Trouble on the romantic front too for Christian Clarke who rather liked the kiss that Syed planted on his lips and comes back for more. When Syed plays it cool, Christian reckons he can get his own way by threatening to tell Syed’s girlfriend all. The saddest sight of the week is Ian Beale as he and Jane return from their holiday in Scotland. He’s wearing a kilt, although Soapland sources have yet to discover if he’s opted to leave his tackle unfettered.

Back at Wylde Manor in Emmerdale (ITV1), Mark’s secret is out in a way that Syed may never be. Wife Natasha is shocked to learn that he has another name and another wife. All comes out when she discovers he’s set up his other wife, Faye, and son in a flat.

Lexi also has news for husband Carl, the tallest man in soap. A little stranger is on the way – she’s pregnant at last. He’s still pining for his true love so doesn’t receive the news with unallayed joy.

It means the Kings are on the increase as brother Jimmy’s girl Nasty Nicola is also expecting.

Two more kings and they’ll have a full house.
