Freddie Hubbard/Without a Song (Blue Note 97093)

This previously unissued live album was recorded in Bristol, Manchester and Germany while Hubbard was on tour in 1969. It captures the brilliant trumpeter in peak form and with great accompaniment from Roland Hanna, Ron Carter and Louis Hayes. Hubbard selected the tracks himself shortly before his death last year and was said to be thrilled to be releasing these at last. The seven tracks include Body and Soul, The Things We Did Last Summer and A Night in Tunisia.

Joe Lovano Us Five/Folk Art (Blue Note 91528)

The saxophonist's latest (and 22nd) recording for Blue Note introduces his newest group, Us Five. Recorded immediately after a week at the Village Vanguard it features Joe on various saxes including a straight alto, a taragato and an aulochrome as well as his usual tenor. The band features two percussionists: Otis Brown and Francisco Mela, Esperanza Spaulding on bass and James Weidman, piano. There are tributes and nods to Coltrane, Ornette Coleman (Ettenro) and Manu Dibango as well as Joe's wife (Song For Judi).
