THE Noisettes are a quirky indie rock band hailing from London, and they first achieved commercial success and nationwide recognition with the second single from their second album, Don’t Stop The Rhythm.
The faded sounds of opening track Wild Young Hearts emerged from the speakers, accompanied by vocalist Shingai Shoniwa’s distinct singing, and then the women herself entered the stage looking like a gem.
Her trendy coiffed hair and eccentric dress sense really bring the originality to the band.
Without their frontwoman, they would still be loud, harsh and wonderful; however, add her smooth strong vocals and individuality and they are elevated to a startlingly original musical riot that you can’t tear your eyes or ears away from.
Next they fly into dance floor filler and favourite of the night Don’t Stop The Rhythm, and the crowd explodes and a sea of hands fills the air.
Shoniwa shows off her incredible singing talent throughout the set. However, it is particularly prominent in Saturday Night, where she sings with a passion that is mind-blowing.
The band dance around each other in an outbreak of friendly fighting, whilst drummer Jamie Morrison whacks his kit wildly with obvious delight. Whether these moves are carefully choreographed or impressively improvised, the chemistry on stage is all natural.
During Cheap Kicks, Shoniwa jumps down from the stage, walks through the crowd and climbs up on top of the bar and completes the end of the song while dancing wildly, welcoming any waving hands.
2009 could definitely be the year for The Noisettes.
