WITH the recent slew of Eighties music comebacks, it is ironic to think that Depeche Mode – who have never been away –- are now probably as big as ever.
Their 12th studio album was only kept off top spot in the album charts by the ubiquitous Lady GaGa. Meanwhile, another mammoth sellout world tour beckons.
Opening single, Wrong, received a mixed response from fans, but its battering-ram type approach and clever vocal refrain make it one of the stand-out tracks.
The rest feels a little more lightweight than some previous Mode efforts and there’s nothing else that really grabs you by the jugular.
In Sympathy is a melodic number which sounds poppier than the band has done for years, while the Dave Gahan-penned Come Back, with its soaring synths, provides another highlight.
