REVIEWS
Rachmaninov: Preludes (Hyperion CDA67700)
The Scottish pianist Steven Osborne gives brilliant readings of Rachmaninov’s preludes, including Op 23 and Op 32. A disc that belongs in all collections.
Szymanowski: The complete music for violin and piano (Hyperion CDA67703)
Violinist Alina Ibragimova and pianist CÉdric Tiberghien do full justice to these rarely heard works, considered some of Szymanowski’s most overtly sensual and vividly gestural music.
Frank Bridge: Piano Quintet etc (Hyperion CDA67726)
More often than not remembered as the teacher of Benjamin Britten, Bridge was an ambitious composer in his own right. This desirable disc includes his Piano Quintet, Three Idylls and String Quartet No 4.
Brahms: Zigeunerlieder (CDA67775)
This compelling album presents a comprehensive selection of Brahms’s secular choral music.
